Ann Holroyd is a Registered Clinical Counsellor with the British Columbia Association of Clinical Counsellors and holds a PhD in Health Science. An experienced counsellor and educator, Ann is committed to working with individuals, couples, and children to facilitate psychological balance.
The process of choosing a counsellor begins long-before you arrive at the first session. Often there is a feeling within ourselves that something is just not right; It maybe a time marked by a great deal of personal introspection or it could be an intervention from an external source— school, family, friends, your doctor—that motivates contact with a therapist. As your therapist, Ann will work with you to establish a meaningful relationship where you feel safe to explore and resolve issues that fit your unique needs at this moment in time.
As a person-centered therapist, Ann will always work toward fostering an environment where clients can encounter themselves and become more intimate with their own thoughts, feelings and motivations.
Moving through life transitions and difficulties in a safe, supportive and resourceful manner so that resolution can be achieved is a primary goal in this person-centred counselling practice. The focus of person-centered therapy is always on your feelings and thoughts, not on those of the therapist and not on diagnosis or categorization.
As an experienced couples counsellor, Ann has completed Level 3 practicum training in the Gottman Method of Couples Therapy. The evidence based Gottman method for making relationships work, recognizes that couples do well together when they become better friends, learn to safely manage conflict, and create ways to support each other's hopes for the future.
Ann offers Jungian sandplay in her counselling practice. It is a therapeutic approach that involves spontaneous, imaginative play in small trays of wet or dry sand with miniature figurines and objects. Jungian sandplay is highly effective with children and youth who are facing grief, loss, trauma and attachment related concerns.
By supporting and guiding children and youth to approach difficult feelings and memories through the medium of sandplay, they become less intense. It is important to realize sandplay is not for every child. Some children prefer other available expressive mediums like art and specialty toys.
Ann works in a private counselling practice in Nanaimo that is within easy driving distance of Parksville, Ladysmith, Qualicum Beach, and Chemainus.
